Students with special educational needs work with our resource teachers in our Resource (Learning) Center, within the classroom, or both.  All students who work in this capacity go through Psychological testing, including an IQ test, achievement tests, fine motor tests, and language tests. These tests are administered by the surrounding public schools.  The students gain entrance to the special education program based on their intelligence, achievement, language skills, and results from previous classroom work.  Students who receive instruction from the Resource Center teachers have an average to above average IQ.  These students receive our extra support due to the discrepancy between their ability and achievement.

We use two programs to meet the needs of our students. The Resource Center is used for students that are based in the general education classroom.  The identified students come to the Resource Center for extra support that they may need.  The students are expected to follow the general education curriculum with modifications.  The second approach—inclusion—is utilized with students that remain in the general education classroom for all instruction throughout the day.  The Resource Center teacher is in the classroom to assist the identified student.  In this method, students are not pulled out of the classroom for individual instruction.

As a Special Education team, we review the Individual Educational Plans (IEP) for each student and decide which program best fulfills the student’s individual needs.
