Dear SJA Family and Friends,

Thank you for your support of our Walk-A-Thon this year! The money provides funding assistance with our sports and PE programs. The Preschool Spring Program is always an entertaining and fun-filled event. Thanks to their teachers, Peggy Kline, Peggy Johnson, Jeanne Conner and their assistants for coordinating the program for our parents.

The Middle School students attended the Indians Game on Monday as part of their math curriculum this year. We are blessed to have several actuaries who volunteer with our middle school throughout the school year. They use the data from sports to teach statistics. The students then attend a game, and work out the problems that were given to them as they watch the game. When they return to school, the actuaries then review the students work for accuracy.
The funds for the field trip are provided through the Actuarial Grant that we have received over the past several years.
Thanks to Mrs. Perry for her organization of the program.

The Preschool Spring Program is Thursday, May 17th at 6:30PM in the gym. I can’t wait to see it as they are very entertaining!

Congratulations to our Track Team! Great participation and SJA broke some CYO track records!

Mrs. Sharpe

I hope everyone enjoyed this beautiful day and had a nice Mother’s Day. It is hard to believe that we are starting our last full week of school. On Friday, we will have our Field Day and Walk-a-thon. Please make sure your child completes the donation envelope which was sent home last week. It is an important fund raising event for our school.

SPELLING Our spelling unit this week is Unit 33 and these words all have ness/ment suffixes. Due to our busy end of the school schedule we will not have any extra words for the remainder of the year.

READING We should complete our novel, Misty of Chincoteague. The students are enjoying this classic realistic fiction about the wild ponies that live on Chincoteague Island off the coast of Virginia. We will have a quiz over the book and watch the movie on Thursday.

MATH The students will review previously taught skills and work on their problem solving strategies in our text books. We will also practice our measurement skills in the garden as we plant tomato plants and late spring seeds. The children have thoroughly enjoyed our garden plots, and I have also enjoyed their enthusiasm and interest in this project.

INDIANA HISTORY We will learn about Indiana’s role in World War I and World War II. The students will find out how events outside of Indiana affected the lives of Hoosiers, and learn how to identify facts and opinions.

A permission slip will be sent home this week for our field trip and picnic to Traders Point Creamery on May 23rd. Please send in $2.50 for the dairy snack by Friday, if your child would like it. After touring the creamery, we will stop by Windy Crest Horse Farm and visit the 20 horses that are stabled there. This should be a great way to wrap up our reading unit on horses.

Have a good week and stay in touch!

Dear SJA Family and Friends,

This very delicious looking salad came right out of our fourth graders bed in the St. Joan garden! Mrs. Salge has the students using their math and science skills as they planted and harvested their garden area.

Congratulations to the students for their very enjoyable and successful Cultural Arts Celebration. The students were awesome and it confirms again why it is so important to continue to grow our Art and Music programs at SJA. This is a celebration of all the students have learned this year, K-8 about the cultures of Australia and New Zealand. The learning experiences incorporate music, art, food and traditions of the area. We have now visited and learned about some of the cultures of every continent over the past 7 years!

Many thanks to Mrs. Schenck, Ms. Hatfield, Mrs. Jeatran, Mrs. Kline and the members of their Cultural arts committee for the organization, practice, and guidance throughout this learning experience.

Next year we will focus on INDIANA! There is so much more to learn than we are able to teach in the 4th grade Indiana History curriculum. If you have any ideas or would like to volunteer, let Ms. Hatfield or Mrs. Jeatran know of your interest.

Congratulations to our new LIS Alumni Scholarship winners from the current fifth grade class. Lily Johnson and Max Montgomery were chosen by the LIS Alumni committee to receive this award. The award provides a $1000.00 scholarship toward their tuition in sixth grade. The scholarship can be renewed for each of the middle school years.

Thanks and congratulations to all the fifth graders who applied. The committee was very impressed with each application this year.

Check out the student art work displayed at Hubbards and Cravens at 49th and Penn!

Happy Mothers’ Day!

Mrs. Sharpe
