Racial Justice Alliance
St. Joan of Arc School values its diverse student population and school community. This year, parents and staff have come together, along with school leadership, to form a Racial Justice Alliance, whose primary goal is to ensure a healthy, diverse, and equitable learning environment for our youth and the entire SJOA community.

RJA Subcommittees

Teacher/Staff Recruitment Support
- Assists in assuring that SJOA School develops and maintains a diverse staff
- Helps with finding candidates from diverse racial cultural backgrounds to coach, substitute teach, and volunteer
- Keeps the RJA and admin up to date on diverse talent to add to Saint Joan of Arc’s wonderful staff by sharing resumes, marketing job opportunities, etc.
- Supports relevant PD for teachers and staff including ongoing cultural competency

Community Engagement
- Plans and coordinates events, including free events, for the RJA and SJOA community to engage in
- Host social events including a welcome for new families, especially families of color, interactive art activities and performances, holiday celebrations, family dances, game nights and movie screenings, poetry readings, ice cream socials, workshops, civic opportunities, multicultural potlucks. Events can occur within school grounds or out in the community
- Collaborates with the School Commission, Parish Council and the PTO to provide events including “coffee hours.”

Parent/ Teacher Resources
- Maintains a physical and virtual library of accessible, developmentally appropriate and culturally responsive resources to help parents facilitate conversations and deepen understanding regarding racial justice
- Hosts book clubs that can meet live and/or virtually
- Offers workshops and trainings
- Collaborates to support purchase of resources
- Helps compile a list of black and other minority owned businesses to support through field trips, guest speeches, etc.
- Helps develop a set of resources from a variety of multicultural perspectives for teachers to use within their classrooms
- Collaborates to support purchase of resources

Student Resources
- Formation of a Black and multicultural student union (this falls under the Community Engagement subcommittee, as well)
- Host reading groups with students
- Provide recess/lunch duty opportunities
- Integrate social justice projects into existing school-wide enrichment periods
- Identify faith-based social justice service learning opportunities and curriculum resources
- Explore opportunities for after school enrichment, including peer mentoring and tutoring.
