Below is a full year's calendar of topics we focus on each month. The way we might 'focus' on these topics could be a blog post sharing a parishioner's experience, a news article, encouraging prayer over a specific group of people, etc. These monthly topics do not negate that we cover every aspect of each, rather, we touch on their importance in the context of respecting life!

In 2021, Pope Francis established the celebration of the World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly. In the U.S., we observe this celebration in September, joining the Church’s efforts to highlight the value and importance of grandparents and the elderly in our families and in society.
While the elderly have traditionally held places of honor in various cultures, today, elderly members of our families and communities often live lives marked by isolation and loneliness. Rather than being a beloved and integral part of a family, they are too often forgotten or overlooked. In the most tragic circumstances, some even seek to end their own lives through assisted suicide so as not to be a burden to their loved ones. Pope Francis has described this shift as a “throwaway culture” in which the weakest are neglected or worse when they are no longer of interest or “use.”
As persons made in the image and likeness of God, we possess an infinite dignity that can never be compromised by age or ability. This truth must guide each of us in our responsibility to lovingly accompany those who are in greater need of our time, care, and attention as they face their later years. Such accompaniment is of particular importance as they near the end of their lives, often enduring great sufferings as they prepare for their entrance to eternal life.
May each of us hear and respond to the plea of the elderly entrusted to our care: “Do not cast me aside in my old age; as my strength fails, do not forsake me” (Psalm 71:9).

Heavenly Father, thank you
for the precious gift of life.
Help us to cherish and protect
this gift, even in the midst of fear,
pain, and suffering.
Give us love for all people,
especially the most vulnerable,
and help us bear witness to the
truth that every life is worth living.
Grant us the humility to accept
help when we are in need,
and teach us to be merciful to all.
Through our words and actions,
may others encounter the
outstretched hands
of Your mercy.
We ask this through
Christ, our Lord.
Amen.

USCCB November 2024 Prayer Guide: As the Church, we recognize that suicide is a tragedy that ends one life and devastates the loved ones left behind. Those who promote physician-assisted suicide try to draw a distinction between those with a mental illness who want to end their lives and those with a terminal illness who express the same wish. This is a dangerously false distinction with far-reaching consequences.
Assisted suicide abandons vulnerable individuals at the moment when they are most in need of our love, care, and support. Even among terminally ill patients, a request to die is nearly always a cry for help, indicating that some aspect of their condition has not been adequately attended to. Those requesting to end their lives typically do not want to die; they want to escape what they perceive to be an intolerable situation, and they tragically believe that suicide is their only way out. The patient requesting assisted suicide is often asking, "Does anyone want me to be alive, or care enough to talk me out of this request and support me through this difficult time?"
Society’s acceptance of assisted suicide sends the false message that under especially difficult circumstances some lives are not worth living. Every suicide is tragic, no matter the circumstances. Nothing diminishes the sanctity of a person's life, or the obligation to protect and care for it. We don't discourage suicide in our society by assisting suicide. We are called to affirm the dignity of human life in all stages and circumstances. Those who are suffering need to be assured of the goodness and value of their lives and provided with authentic care and support.

As the Massachusetts legislature considers physician-assisted suicide, Cardinal O'Malley, OFM Cap., Archbishop of Boston, responded in the Boston Globe.

National Vocational Awareness
God our Father, we thank you for calling men and women to serve in your Son's Kingdom as priests, deacons, and consecrated persons. Send your Holy Spirit to help others to respond generously and courageously to your call. May our community of faith support vocations of sacrificial love in our youth and young adults.

Prayer for Vocations:
"O Holy Spirit, Spirit of wisdom and divine love, impart Your knowledge, understanding, and counsel to our youth that they may know the vocation wherein they are called by God to serve. Give them courage and strength to follow Divine Will. Guide their uncertain steps, strengthen their resolutions, shield their chastity, fashion their minds, conquer their hearts, and lead them to the vineyards where they will labor in God's holy service. Amen."

SJOA's seminarian to pray for is Casey Deal, who is studying at Saint Meinrad, and there are "baseball" cards of him at Church in the brochure rack at each door. We have many from 2022-2023, the only update being that he is now in the next stage, the Configuration Stage.
